Reserve | 2009 DJ Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
2009 was a very low cropping vintage thanks to a heat wave during flowering. However, Cabernet Sauvignon excelled in McLaren Vale in 2009, which is why we decided to make our first under the Oliver’s Taranga label. This wine comes from the ‘Old’ Cabernet block planted in 1973.

Some say the ol’ Cabernet Sauvignon is Shiraz’s poor cousin. Sans elegance, lots of leather, a little too much tannin. But when you try a Cabernet that’s well made, there’s no other adjective more apt than elegant.
This is Oliver’s first release of 100% Cabernet. I’m a fan of both Corinna’s co-fermented Shiraz/Cabernet and the HJ Shiraz, although I’m now struggling to cherry pick a favourite.
This is impressive Cabernet, and different to your usual suspects from Coonawarra and Margaret River. The nose is full of dark fruit and cedar and spice, a hint of dark chocolate cake. Vanilla, which makes sense, as this wine spent 24 months maturing in French Oak. This is a big South Aussie red wine with smooth, slightly leathery tannin and a lot of blackcurrant, dark fruit and a gorgeous plummy hue.
Decant and pair with seared beef fillet, maybe some mushrooms, café de paris butter. Savour over the meal and remember the McLaren is so much more than simply Shiraz.
P.S if it looks like the bottle is empty, that’s because it is. Got a little excited and forgot to snap prior to tasting. Oops!

This is the first release of a new 100% Cabernet sourced from a block planted in 1973 by Corrina Wright's grandfather. 2009 was a very low cropping vintage thanks to a heat-wave at flowering. However, it was a year when Cabernet Sauvignon excelled in McLaren Vale hence the decision to inaugurate this wine. This is a big Cabernet, matured for 24 months in new French oak. Superb totally opaque inky black dark purple colour with deep black dark purple hue. The nose displays scents of violets, youthful ripe blackcurrant, a hint of dark chocolate, cedar and spice. Boasting excellent weight and richness the palate delivers mouthfilling flavours of ripe blackcurrant, black cherry, liquorice, a touch of tobacco, cedar and spice. Solid, slightly chewy but fine grained tannins provide excellent structure. Superb depth with long ripe blackcurrant, black cherry, cedary tobacco and spice aftertaste. Cellar 5-8 years.

Grown on a block of cabernet sauvignon planted in 1973. Unusual to see a varietal cabernet under the Oliver’s Taranga name.Strong wine. Warm flavoured. intense blackcurrant and blackberry, dried herbs and chocolate. Lots of sweet fruit impact; tannin to match. Long. A wine for a Big Red occasion. Plenty of dark-fruited substance. Rated : 93 Points

Dense purple-crimson, it is at once full bodied and complex, yet avoids and suggestion of over-extraction or over-ripe grapes. Blackcurrant fruit, regional dark chocolate notes, fine dusty tannins and intergrated oak come together to provide an impressive wine. Drink to 2030

Interesting aromas of dried herbs and currants, with hints of tar. Full bodied, with silky tannins. Coffee bean, currants and dark fruits. Intense and very stylish. Better in 2014. Screwcap.
